Convict Cichlid (Amatitlania nigrofasciata)
Origin: Central America, particularly in rivers and lakes of Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica
Size: 4 cm
Coloration: Pale gray to bluish body with bold black vertical stripes; males may display more intense coloration and a slight pinkish hue on their bellies, while females often have brighter orange on their lower bodies
Temperament: Aggressive and territorial, especially during breeding
Compatibility: Best kept with other robust and similarly aggressive species; avoid housing with peaceful or smaller fish that might be bullied
Tank Size: Minimum 80 liters
Water Parameters: 24-27°C, pH 6.5-8.0, soft to moderately hard water
Diet: Omnivorous – Feeds on high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter
Care Level: Easy
Breeding: Egg-layer – Convict Cichlids are prolific breeders; females lay eggs on flat surfaces and fiercely guard their young, making them highly protective parents
Lifespan: 8-10 years
Health Considerations: Hardy and adaptable, but regular water changes and a well-maintained tank are essential to keep them healthy
Tank Setup: A tank with rocks, caves, and other hiding spots is ideal; provide plenty of territories to reduce aggression, especially if breeding pairs are present
Fun Fact: Convict Cichlids are named for their distinctive striped pattern, which resembles a prison uniform; they are known for their strong parental instincts and will defend their fry vigorously.
